Alan Cumming has one very surprising BFF. The Good Wife actor, 49, stopped by Watch What Happens Live! on Thursday, Oct. 23, and revealed that one of his best friends is none other than Ms. Monica Lewinsky

Appearing on the talk show to promote his latest Broadway run of Cabaret, Cumming answered a question from a viewer about his relationship with the famed former White House mistress.

“We met at a party about 16 years ago — this Marie Claire party,” he told host Andy Cohen. “They’d done a thing about her and I’d done an article for Marie Claire and we were at the same table. [We] went for dinner and we just stayed friends.”

“She is really one of the kindest, most loyal, loving, tender, funny girls I’ve known,” Cumming continued of Lewinsky. “I think she’s really one of my best friends. She’s been at my wedding, she knows my family. She’s lovely.”

Cumming married his partner Grant Shaffer in a London civil ceremony in January 2007, and remarried the illustrator in January 2012 in New York. He got close to Lewinsky at the height of her political scandal, as news broke in early 1998 that former President Bill Clinton had been involved with the then-intern.

In the years since, Lewinsky, 41, has shied away from the public eye. She chose to lead a more private life, until this past May when she penned a piece for Vanity Fair about her experience and her subsequent years. The former political hopeful joined Twitter this week and made her first public speech in 13 years at the Forbes‘ Under 30 Summit on Monday, Oct. 20.

“I think what’s prompted her to come back into the public eye is that she just realized that her life was so difficult for her to move on from this thing,” Cumming explained on WWHL. “To actually try and hide and not be a part, not be in the world, was so difficult and was so kind of frustrating for her, that she was just like, ‘Hey everybody, this is what my life’s like. I’ve learned some great lessons about it and I would like to share them with people.'”
