As cameras panned away from Mitchell, he started typing on an imaginary phone or tablet on his palm. It remains unknown why Mitchell made the odd gesture, but some people online speculated that the sports reporter forgot what he was supposed to do at the end of the segment. At a loss, he started tapping away on his imaginary device.

The moment has drawn comparisons to when BBC News anchor Simon McCoy held a pack of paper in his hands through a live broadcast about "drunk tanks" in 2013. The network later said McCoy accidentally picked up the paper instead of the gadget, and simply "went with it."
