Ben Affleck gets Batman. The actor told the Sunday Times on Sept. 14, that he can relate to his caped crusader character in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice — but not necessarily his heroic qualities.
“For me, anger is so deeply buried and contained,” Affleck, 42, told the paper, “that when it does kind of come out, it comes out in stronger bursts.”
Jennifer Garner‘s husband explained how he’s usually more reserved and passive in situations — until his emotions spiral. “I tend to be respectful, polite, get along, put up with, put up with, put up with…” Affleck said of his bottled-up anger. “Then, when it finally emerges, it’s not something I have a ton of control over.”
The actor, who stars as Bruce Wayne in Zach Snyder‘s upcoming superhero installment, elaborated that he doesn’t “go into a Wolverine berserker rage.” Still, the father of three confessed that he considered his anger issues “a character flaw, I think.”
Affleck mused: “I should sit down and say, ‘Listen, I just want to let you know what happened there wasn’t okay,’ instead of going, let it go, let it go, let it go … ‘Ah, that’s not a big deal,’ until finally you just pop!”

In the same interview, the Gone Girl star admitted that he hopes being Batman will create more opportunities for his film directing career. Affleck, who’s already pocketed a Best Picture Oscar for 2012’s Argo, claimed that being a part of Batman vs. Superman has been an entirely new experience for him. “To get the exposure to a movie of this scale is an education,” he claimed to the Sunday Times.
In fact, Affleck insisted that he was thankful to play Batman — especially as a huge fan of action movies. “[They’re the] best version of popcorn movies,” he said of action flicks, adding that his favorites include Midnight Run, the Lost Ark, and Ocean’s 11 (which starred his brother Casey Affleck). “Being raised in that cinematic environment, I viewed these movies as just as interesting as any.”
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
