Melissa Rivers Makes First TV Appearance Since Mom Joan Rivers’ Death, Says President Obama Sent Condolences

Melissa Rivers has received an overwhelming amount of support since the death of Joan Rivers on Sept. 4. Now, in her first TV appearance since saying goodbye to her mother, Melissa is opening up about one condolence letter in particular she received  from President Barack Obama.

In a clip from the Fashion Police: Celebrating Joan E! special — set to air Friday, Sept. 19 — Melissa revealed that the first family sent their sympathies to her and her family. The special also features Joan’s former Fashion Police costars, Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne, and George Kotsiopoulos.

“She affected so many people and people you would never expect to have humor,” Melissa said. “I received a letter from the White House. From President Obama. Someone who was often a target of her jokes — as well as Mrs. Obama — I received a handwritten note that said, ‘Not only did she make us laugh, she made us think.'”

Osbourne couldn’t agree more. “She really did. And if it wasn’t for your mother I wouldn’t be able to be me. My mother [Sharon Osbourne] wouldn’t be able to be her,” she added. “Any outspoken, independent woman wouldn’t be who they are if it wasn’t for women like Joan paving the way.”

Fashion Police: Celebrating Joan airs Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. EST on E!
