Ryan Reynolds got superbuff to play antihero Deadpool in the upcoming movie of the same title, but his workouts didn’t just take place in the gym — the doting dad roped in his baby girl, James, to help.
“I take her on hikes all the time. It’s great!” Reynolds, 39, told Us Weekly on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at an Eddie Bauer event in Lake Arrowhead, Calif.
Blake Lively‘s husband revealed that he slips their 11-month-old into a baby carrier and heads for the hills. “She’s outside all the time,” he said. “One of the reasons I go hiking is for exercise, so having an 18 pound baby on you is just a better workout!”
Being a new parent with wife Lively has also inspired Reynolds to be more involved in working to protect the environment for his daughter, and on Wednesday he teamed up with Eddie Bauer to plant American Forests’ 50 millionth tree. (He named the sapling “Gordon.”)
The Self/less star’s love of the great outdoors was sparked growing up in Canada when he signed up for a high school program that involved spending five months learning environmental awareness and survival techniques.
“That time was spent living on glaciers and building snow caves and living in the forest and building lean-tos and kayaking,” Reynolds said. “It just gave me a kind of outlook that I really didn’t have before.”
Like most teens, he said that he had no fear of danger when he was out in the wilderness. “I definitely thought I was immune to the pitfalls of injury or death,” he said. “I would have lived on a glacier for weeks on end wearing nothing by tighty-whities if they let me!”
So will he let his daughter go on the same outdoors program when she reaches the 10th grade?
“Absolutely!” he said. “That program changed my life.”
