Since the Sunday, Dec. 14 live finale of The X Factor, the Internet and media have been buzzing about the possibility that Mel B was abused by her husband Stephen Belafonte. The singer and judge on the UK reality series appeared bruised and cut during the broadcast after missing Saturday’s show while in the hospital. She also wasn’t wearing her wedding ring during the taping.
Fans immediately took to Twitter, speculating that the former Spice Girl, 39, whose full name is Melanie Brown, had been hurt by her husband of seven years. Though Belafonte, 39, defended himself on Twitter, he has since spoken out about the allegations, talking to the Daily Mail.
“Who accused me of it, did she accuse me of it, the police, the hospital, who accused me of it?” he asked, adding, “No one has accused me of anything.”
The film producer then claimed not to have seen any news about the state of his marriage or abuse rumors.
“I never saw anything, is there something online about me?” he asked days after tweeting about the allegations. “Listen I had no idea, I didn't know I have no idea, what was it New York Times, or was it the LA Times, what was it, this week, what paper was I on?”
When told he was featured on British tabloids, he claimed not to have read them. Earlier this week, the Sun Newspaper reported that Mel B had walked out on Belafonte amid the rumors of abuse. Belafonte did not comment on that report.
“You'll see all the legal letters going out tomorrow,” he said when asked flat out if he had hit his wife. “Everybody's been contacted by Mel's representative, all the papers, that said: ‘I did not hit her, this isn't going on, that's not going on.’”
