It’s just the beginning! In November 2013, a young leukemia patient named Miles Scott captured the hearts of Americans everywhere when, with help of the city of San Francisco, he fulfilled his dream of becoming Batman for a day. In cooperation with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, volunteers transformed San Francisco into Gotham City so that Batkid could fight evil. Now little Miles, 5, has his own documentary, Batkid Begins.
The film’s trailer was released at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con on July 26 and shows a behind-the-scenes look at Batkid’s journey to superhero status.
During his special day on Nov. 15, 2013, Miles “saved” the city from villains including The Riddler and The Penguin. According to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, more than 16,000 people RSVP’d to help make Batkid’s dream come true, and more than 20,000 people showed up at San Francisco’s City Hall to cheer him on. He also got to ride in a “Batmobile,” and was given a key to the city from the mayor.
Even Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice star Ben Affleck got in on the Batkid action, tweeting, “Batkid. Best Batman ever.”
Miles’ leukemia is currently in remission, and the Caped Crusader has made several public appearances, including throwing the first pitch at a San Francisco Giants baseball game in April.
“I think he’s a really special kid,” Batkid Begins director Dana Nachman told The Hollywood Reporter. “He has a real sense of self for that age. I’m interested in what he becomes because he’s a special guy.”
