But what will Drake say!? Tweens everywhere are grabbing tissues, because Degrassi has been canceled after 14 seasons. The hit Canadian series, Degrassi: The Next Generation, will air its series finale this summer.
“For an incredible 14 seasons, Degrassi has been a groundbreaking show tackling so many important topics that real teens face in their everyday lives,” said Keith Dawkins, SVP and general manager for Nicktoons, TeenNick, and Nick Jr, via Variety on Thursday, June 4.
He continued: “In the final episodes on TeenNick and through the hour-long special and social activations, we hope to say goodbye in a way that is both fitting to the show and Degrassi’s passionate fan base.”
Degrassi premiered in 2001, adding new stars each season. The fan favorite created memorable characters (Spinner! Manny! Eli! Clare!) and launched careers of several stars, such as The Vampire Diaries alum Nina Dobrev and 90210 star Shenae Grimes. Oh, and who could forget rapper Drake, aka Jimmy Brooks!
“Few producers are as blessed as we have been, working with so many talented and creative individuals at TeenNick for 14 seasons of Degrassi; including 385 episodes and over 100 pieces of original short-form web content,” executive producer Stephen Stohn, who also played Archie “Snake” Simpson, added. “We thank all those at TeenNick who have worked so hard over the years to help us create a television series that changes with the times and continues to authentically connect and interact with the youth audience.”
Degrassi’s series finale is set for Friday, July 31, on TeenNick. Beforehand, a one-hour special titled “It Goes There: Degrassi’s Most Talked About Moments” will air, featuring former cast members, creators, and fans discussing their favorite memories from Toronto’s Degrassi High School.
